Around the Town: How to Pamper Yourself in Ft. Scott with 10 Self Care Activities
When a guest recently asked us about self care opportunities in Ft. Scott, KS, we started making a list. And we quickly realized–Ft. Scott really is a great place to be pampered, and focus on yourself! Our little town has so many great opportunities to slow down and take care of you.
Here are 10 ways to pamper yourself, reset your mood, and forget the stress of your life at home:
1. SPEND TIME IN NATURE
There’s nothing quite like sitting quietly and watching water–whether it’s the still and sparkly water of Ft. Scott Lake, or the sounds of the rippling Rock Creek Lake Waterfalls, it is sure to be meditative. Ask us about our favorite quiet walking trails of Gunn Park - simply gorgeous! Take a leisurely stroll around Belltown Trail, which runs alongside the Marmaton River. More of the adventurous type? Hop in your 4 wheeler and take a rocky ride through Kansas Rocks Recreation Park. Or take a guided hunting or fishing trip on Timber Hills Lake Ranch.
2. EXERCISE MORE
If you haven't been to Ft. Scott since last Spring, you may notice something a bit different. There are less cars on the street and several bright yellow bikes sprinkled about town. These spunky little rides are part of Ft. Scott's new Bike Share Program and are making our town a bit healthier! Park your car when you get into town (we have reserved parking spaces in a private lot for all of our guests), and set off to explore. 10 yellow bikes are available for community members and visitors to take and ride! Riders must be at least 12 years of age to ride. If under 18 a parent/guardian must sign the waiver form.
Prefer riding in a golf cart as opposed to a bike? No problem! Ft. Scott has a beautiful golf course for those who live with a club in their hand! Named one of the best municipal courses in Kansas, Woodland Hills is a parkland-style course winding through beautiful scenery, with elevation changes and some of the best views in Bourbon County.
3. EAT HEALTHY
People don’t normally associate staying at a bed and breakfast with health food (and we do have some pretty amazing ‘treat yourself’ food, like our Famous Stuffed French Toast), but we also offer a The Lighter Side plate every morning as an option. It includes your choice of Lyons Granola & Fruit Parfait, Smoked Salmon Bagel or Poached Eggs and Fruit! Nate's Place also has dozens of other healthy choices that will suit just about any nutritional need, such as Gluten Free and Keto options.
Having a smaller breakfast means you can try even more of the great restaurants in Ft. Scott. A few healthy ones include of course, our very own Nate's Place. At our hometown deli Marsha's Deli you will find amazing homemade soups and salad options such as Chicken and Wild Rice Soup and Tomato Tortellini Soup.
Crooner's Lounge is another great place for a healthy dinner in Ft. Scott. Their menu changes frequently, but you can always count on amazing seafood such as Sea Bass or Drum and a variety of fresh salads and vegetable choices. Dinner is served Wed - Sat from 5 - 9 pm.
4. INDULGE IN A HOBBY
When is the last time you spent time doing something you really love? Something that isn’t on a to-do list, something that you don’t HAVE to do. Vacation is the time to kick start your hobby. Read a book on one of our porches or while lounging in a hammock by the koi pond (reading email doesn’t count), knit while sitting in a porch swing, or paint one of the beautiful scenes in our town. Love to shoot? Try your luck at Rifle Golf. This newest shooting sport at Timber Hills Lake Ranch is taking the country by storm. Tired of shooting at paper targets, tin cans, or three-dimensional bleeding zombie busts? Put your marksmanship skills to the test and see how you hold up against your friends by shooting a round of Rifle Golf. Or for those who like a softer touch, roam the fragrant hills of lavender at The Lavender Patch. A working lavender farm, with ongoing planting, weeding, harvesting, and everything in between! Their lavender is used for bouquets, wreathes, oils, sachets, soaps, lotions, scrubs, and so much more! 5. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY
Everyone always says that you have to take care of your body because it’s the only one you get, but a lot of us act as if we have a spare in the upstairs closet. We carry too many things at one time, we look down at our phones for hours every day, we wear shoes that look cute but throw our entire body out of alignment.

6. SLOW DOWN A BIT
Do you ever feel like your brain is on overdrive…just racing from one thought to another? That’s a good sign that you need to slow down. Take a walk around the lake, go pick fresh fruit or learn how to be a Virtual Bee Keeper at Black Dog Farm (this is also the amazing farm that supplies our wonderful vegetables for our Farm-to-Table dishes) or just simply watch the clouds from the lawn in front of the Mansions.
Some of our favorite things to do to slow down? Take a nap in the hammock or spend some time on our front porch. The swaying helps reset the heart rate, and who doesn't love the feeling of the sun on their face? Or take a walk around town and explore our many quaint shops like The Iron Star, Trader Dave's Antiques or Sunshine Boutique.
7. ENJOY THE THEATRE
If you're a bit more cultured or enjoy some laughs, take in a show at The Liberty Theatre. This beautiful, restored theatre is host to some of the best touring acts in the nation. Also home of Crooner’s Lounge! Private & corporate events are also welcome! Coming up in Feb., enjoy the sounds of Elton Jon and Fleetwood Mac including Elton Dan, an amazing tribute band!
8. CONNECT MORE
If you’re planning a Kansas getaway, why not invite some of your favorite people? Many of our guests bring friends because there are so many great places to congregate at the Mansions. You can meet for breakfast, share laughs over happy hour in The Library Bar, or hang out in our gazebo telling stories. There are comfy sofas on our upstairs deck (yes, you can take your happy hour goodies up there), and lots of chairs all around the inn.
9. TRY SOMETHING NEW
Vacation is a great time to break your routine, and push yourself out of your comfort zone and try new things! Consider yourself a brewery aficionado? We are proud to say that we have one of the best, right here in Ft. Scott, The Boiler Room Brewhaus. This fun place allows you to enjoy a craft beer, talk with friends and or even play a board game. Wine and bourbon are also available. They even use local ingredients, such as honey from Black Dogs Farm, Garland, Kansas in our Hives Secret Hefeweizen and hops from the Kansas Hop Company located in Ottawa, Kansas.
10. GET SOME SLEEP
It sounds basic, but it’s absolutely critical–your body can not rejuvenate if you don’t get some rest. So as you plan your Ft. Scott getaway, don’t over schedule yourself…let yourself sleep in, take a nap in the afternoon, go to bed early. It’s not being lazy–it’s being smart, and making an investment in your future health.
